From a posting calico-l@calico.org: Carnegie Mellon has been working on speech recognition in the school of Computer Science for quite a while. There is an entity called The Language Technology Institute, http://www.lti.cs.cmu.edu/Research/. Project Listen is the most relevant project to the question: it is a literacy project. The computer listens to a child read an onscreen text and corrects when it perceives an error.
