Second Life in Education
Webheads
and EduNation
As of late 2006, Webheads have been exploring
Second Life. I'm recording here some tips and tricks as profered
by the organizers of this venture, Gavin Dudeney, Nicky Hockly, and Graham
Stanley, and by many other Webhead contributors.
In mid 2007 Gavin writes: "Weve now completed our move from
EduNation to EduNation II (beside the original island) and are back ready for
teaching and training in a new, bigger and lighter area with plenty of water
and some new teaching tools. As always, if youre looking for temporary
spaces for classes or training seminars, please dont hesitate to get in
touch. The original EduNation island is being rezoned over the next few days
and will feature new economical rental plots for educators, with double prim
allowances. You can find EduNation II here: http://tinyurl.com/34l8mw . In Oct 2007
the address was given as

Getting to EduNation
- Navigation hints are available from Linden at
http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/category.php?id=22
- Dennis made a SLurl that will teleport you to EduNation:
http://tinyurl.com/ylc3l6. He also says
that Elizabeth once gave the coordinates for the hut as: 104,239,313
- Another way to find the Webheads beach hut is to use the Second Life
'Search' facility and look for 'Edunation'. Once in Second Life, to find the
Webheads Hut on EduNation, click the Search button at the bottom of the screen.
Searching for EduNation will give you two results (highight a result and click
Teleport to go to either, and you can also simply search for Webheads to get
the second result.):
- EduNation, which gives a direct link to the intro to the island,
and the guided tour, which is worth taking for finding out a bit more about the
island. It's a small vehicle - if you right-click on it and choose 'Sit',
you'll be given an intro spiel and then whisked off around the island for a
flying tour with commentary. If you're feeling lazy when you arrive, there are
a couple of hammocks set out there for a quick rest. You'll also find general
information about EduNation in the form of notecards, and a wearable map which
will indicate your position on the island as you walk around it. If you want to
use the Map and teleport, it's EduNation (69, 48, 22)
- Webheads @ EduNation, which will take you to just outside the
Webheads Hut, maintained by Graham Stanley. Walk up the steps and click on the
door to enter. As Graham said, he's already started decorating and you'll find
a general stand with information about Webheads, a link to an audio interview
with Vance and an in-world RSS feed taken directly from this blog, as well as a
useful visitor counter so we can see how many WebHeads are also 'virtual'.
Again, on the Map it's EduNation (97, 216, 22)
- Another way is to use this direct link from your web browser
(launches the SL client, which you need to have installed on your computer
beforehand):

- For information on the Consultants-E island 'Edunation' -

Finding Webheads
- Inside Second Life, right click on your avatar and pull down your
groups option and add yourself to the Webheads group.
- After that, open up the Webheads group list
- You can see from this who is in-world, and so send them a
message, even if they aren't on your friends list.
- It also has a feature that allows anyone to send everyone in the
group an IM, with landmarks, which is a very useful feature if there's a
meeting and people are moving to different locations - it only works if people
are in the group, however, so I highly recommend that all Second Life Webheads
join up
And here are some artifacts of Webheads
experiences in 2nd Life
