Guiding principle 3 - Technology should be linked and integrated with curriculum: making the parts work together

As in a properly conceived workshop, the tools are not seen in isolation from one another but are assembled with a purpose and plan for integration in mind. At the MLI

• We started out with a text-based environment where texts could be integrated through various software packages into teaching and exercise components.
• Toward this end, teachers were encouraged early on to create web pages and think in terms of linkages with one another and with materials available on the Internet.
• The concept has blossomed through integration of Internet and grass-roots development and multimedia throughout all aspects of our program.

I have tried to discourage thinking about CALL as a distinct component of our curriculum, and succeeded I think in encouraging people to think in terms of the 'curriculum' primarily, applying CALL only as it would appropriately enhance and augment the teaching goals of the institute. As a result the horse is placed squarely before the cart, with clearly defined pedagogical goals guiding a cart which everyone is happy to jump on, since they see technology as worthwhile both for professional development but as a topic of communicative language development in class.
